The Opportunity
We’re looking for an experienced Senior Gateway Engineer to join a high-performing federal government team in Canberra. This role will see you provide expert technical advice, manage critical gateway infrastructure, and influence ICT strategy at an enterprise level.
You’ll be working with a mix of government stakeholders, third-party suppliers, and inter-agency groups to ensure the delivery of a robust and secure infrastructure capability that underpins essential services.
What you’ll be doing
- Designing, implementing and maintaining a secure gateway and data centre infrastructure.
- Providing expert technical support across projects — from build and test through to deployment.
- Leading the administration and operation of network kit, load balancing, proxy, firewall, VPN, DNS and email services.
- Contributing to ICT strategy, operational policy, and change management.
- Mentor colleagues while sharing your expertise as the subject matter expert.
- Driving continuous improvement and keeping on top of emerging technologies.
What we’re looking for
- 5+ years’ experience in gateway engineering, data centre networking or large-scale infrastructure environments.
- Strong skills with F5 / Blue Coat load balancing, Layer 4–7 switching and proxy systems.
- Hands-on experience with Cisco ACI, Nexus switches, routers, and routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, EIGRP).
- Proficiency with Palo Alto firewalls and IPS solutions.
- Experience designing and implementing VPN, DNS (Infoblox) and email solutions.
- Knowledge of hybrid/public cloud integration.
- Familiarity with Australian Government security frameworks, including the ASD ISM and Essential Eight.
